Working with one of my long-time students.
The goal of the hit and hold drill is to create a feedback station that limits the flipping of the club head through impact. If we understand that the club face is responsible for about 75% of the direction the ball goes, a good move would be to make sure we create a stable foundation to control the face. This drill does just that.
What you want is a noodle or alignment rod set about a foot or two in front of you. From there the idea is to release the club into the ground and have your body pivot match so you can stop the club before it hits the noodle. If the drill is hard, it might be the sequencing isn’t quite right or for this student, he was falling just a bit back at impact causing a little bit of a flip.
Give this drill a try to start stabilizing the club face through impact!

ALIGNMENT
The most important thing we can teach anyone is how to properly aim their body and club. Without correct alignment, most of what we teach becomes a lot harder to build.
So firsts things first, we want to make sure the club is pointed at the target and the feet line up parallel left.
We do this to set up for a successful stock shot which is a a ball the start one way, curves back the to the target but never over curves the target line. That’s the goal.
Establishing that target line is what gives us the base to build that nice drawing shot. Pay attention to your alignment next time you go to the course and start implementing the feel of true aim.

A little home made visual here of pressure shift in the downswing. This is something that good players do..
If you’re a golfer who is very upper body dominant and has an over the top type action in the downswing, there’s a high probability that you’re lacking this pressure shift (frontal plane torque) across to your lead foot. This is a movement that can assist in helping the club plane shallow in the downswing.
The feeling you want to create when starting your downswing is that your body mass stays back (behind the ball) as your pressure shifts across, as illustrated in the above video. Effectively you want your back to stay facing the target as your weight begins to shift across - The complete opposite to an ‘over the top’ type movement.
We know through using force plate technology that this pressure shift back across to the lead side actually happens before the backswing is even completed in elite players.
Important to note that if you get too much of this pressure shift the club can get stuck behind you and become too shallow.
Give this a go on your next practice session. Can you build up the feeling that your pressure starts to shift across as you delay the turning of your upper torso.
